One of the challenges was that the edge of the flow was actually moving and this had to be stabilized before a structure could be placed on it. In construction, the whole face of the flow was excavated and a geotextile buttress was constructed which was finished with a lift of native "glass." The footings for the stairway actually are setting on the end of the buttress.
